The goal of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation’s Communications Team is to “tell our story.” How do you explain the economic impact, the events we host, our community partnerships and overall fun facts about what it takes to serve as the San Diego region’s premier gathering place? The answer is content, content, content. The most important tool we use to do this is the Corporation’s blog, the Convention Center Connection, which we refer to as our “newsroom.” The website, VisitSanDiego.com, has a reach of nearly a million views per year, and our content is shared across our social media platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
All content is written, designed and produced in-house. This includes: videos, infographic, photography, animations and of course, copy. A total of 46 original blog posts were published in the 2017 calendar year. We differ greatly from other convention centers, who mostly don’t have in-house communications teams. Other venues rely on ad agencies or visitors’ bureaus. But we operate like an in-house agency and report from the inside.
Our in-house analytics team measured the consumption of each post, which led to a “Top 10” list that we were able to share with our subscribers, stakeholders and social media followers. It was touted as the “stories you read most,” putting the power in their hands. The recap’s design includes visuals, in-house designed graphics and as an added bonus this year, we produced a “holiday video” which we promoted by including in our year-end e-blast. We also used this as an opportunity to cross-promote on Facebook and Twitter.
The email had a 22 percent open rate. Our blog in 2017 had a 55 percent increase in page views over the previous year.
