    Background

    Organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the HK Watch and Clock Fair launched a marketing component called Salon de TE. This being the only hall opened for the general public to showcase 150 international watch brands.

    To set the Salon de TE apart from the other trade halls an introductory passage of 6000sq ft. was provided by the event organiser. This included an entrance treatment, introductory passage and a stage for multi-purpose activities.

    Apart from having to convey a feeling of new discovery for its visitors in the design, another pressing challenge was there was only 3 days for the onsite set up.

    Design concept

    The concept “Journey to the Stars” was developed as a thematic experienced for the Salon de TE based on the notion of new discoveries. Our design’s intention was to evoke the visitors’ imagination with reference to space travel before they proceeded into explore the exhibitors’ booths.

    Design application

    The layout was in 3 parts. First, a dark elliptical extruded opening created the entrance. Inside 2 rock-like textured rotundas with sound and motion graphics were suspended on the ceiling. Secondly, inside the hall stood 4 x (15ft wide x 16ft high) LED archways to dramatize the perspective and give a feeling of time travel. Next 3 x (10ft. dia.) rounded windows introduced the different zones of the Salon de TE.

    A 130sq ft. stage with a LED backdrop is placed at the end of this introductory passage. To complete the overall design of this opened multi-purpose area, two interlocking lit ringed halos hung above with asteroid seats underneath. The activities here included product parades, cocktail receptions and open forums. In default mode this opened space operated as an informal resting and meeting point for visitors.
