    Media & Interactive

    The Media & Interactive Design Awards contains 5 divisions and 61 categories for entrants to choose from.

    The 48th Media & Interactive Awards will accept entries from January 15, 2018 through April 13, 2018. Student entries accepted in all categories. Click the category names below for more information.

    Alternative Media
    • Ambient Media

      Ambient advertisements are effective means at pushing a brand message in front of consumers and can develop even better top of mind recall within target audiences. This provides the ability to advertisers to maintain brand awareness created by other advertising efforts. Ambient media can produce mass attention in centralized locations, or directly interact with consumers during normal every day activities. Examples are messages on the backs of car park receipts, on hanging straps in railway carriages and on the handles of supermarket trolleys. It also includes such techniques as projecting huge images on the sides of buildings, or slogans on the gas bags of hot air balloons. Ambient media in the field of advertising are often mixed with ambient media developed based on ambient intelligent technology.

    • Augmented Reality

      In Augmented Reality, the augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match. Using advanced AR technology in advertising - the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally usable. Artificial information about the environment and the objects in it can be stored and retrieved as an information layer on top of the real world view.

    • Digital Display or POP

      A product display near a cash register or checkstand designed to encourage impulse buying, usually provided by the manufacturer or any display inside a store created to increase interest in the store's products. Can also include window displays. Must be digitally based to be submitted to this category.

    • Digital Outdoor - Billboard

      A digital billboard is a billboard that creates digital images that are changed by a computer.

    • Digital Outdoor - Transit

      Advertising of a digital nature that appears inside and outside on public transport vehicles, in waiting areas, and at stations and terminals.

    • Digital Poster

      Traditional poster definition but in a digital format.

    • Digital Sign

    • Guerilla Marketing

      Guerilla marketing refers to highly aggressive marketing practices using primarily non-traditional mediums.

    • Integrated Campaign

      A multidisciplinary approach which uses a number of marketing communication techniques in order to deliver a consistent set of messages. The aim is to achieve seamless communication with the audience. Must include more than 1 platform of communication - i.e., web, broadcast, print.

    • Mobile Device - Advertising

      Advertising using the medium of mobile phones or tablets. All aspects of the entry will be evaluated.

    • Mobile Device - Graphics

      Graphics designed for use on mobile phones or tablets. In this category only the graphic and not the GUI is being evaluated.

    • Infographic

      This category is for an infographic distributed or displayed digitally. Information graphics or infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These graphics present complex information quickly and clearly,[1] such as in signs, maps, journalism, technical writing, and education. With an information graphic, computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians develop and communicate concepts using a single symbol to process information.

    • Online Presentation

      Presentation designed to be distributed and/or viewed online.

    • Virtual Reality

      The computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.

    Digital/Electronic Publications
    • Digital or Online Annual Report

      An annual report is a comprehensive report on a company's activities throughout the preceding year. Annual reports are intended to give shareholders and other interested people information about the company's activities and financial performance. Entry must be digital in nature - printed Annual Reports are submitted during the Print & Packaging Awards.

    • eBook - Children's

      Digital book or ePub designed specifically for children.

    • eBook - Other

      Digital edition or ePub of any kind of book other than a children's publication.

    • Digital Catalog - B2B

      Catalog for a business that sells products or provides services to other businesses. A to B marketing.

    • Digital Catalog - Consumer

      Catalog for a business that sells products or provides services to directly to consumers. B to C marketing.

    • Digital Magazine - Consumer

      Magazine that covers a broad or narrow interest and is directed to the general public

    • Digital Magazine - Other

      Any other digital magazine publication - can be B2B, Trade, Association, etc.

    • Digital Newsletter - Consumer

      A bulletin issued periodically to the members of a society, business, or organization. This category is specifically for consumer markets and must be published digitally. Entries can usually also be entered into Email categories.

    • Digital Newsletter - Other

      A bulletin issued periodically to the members of a society, business, or organization. This category is specifically for anything other than consumer markets and must be published digitally. Entries can usually also be entered into Email categories.

    Film & Video
    • Animated Film

      Can be long or short. Broadcast outlet is not specific - but must be completely animated otherwise entry must be placed in alternate Film/Video category.

    • Audio-Visual Presentation

      Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Donec gravida tincidunt imperdiet. Suspendisse a An exhibition, performance, demonstration or lecture utilizing communication media directed at both the sense of sight and the sense of hearing.

    • Corporate Film or Video

      Corporate films are digital files that contain video along with stills / animation to explain goals and objectives of companies and highlight the key players. They are tools for providing a valuable glimpse of a company’s infrastructure and resources, present its selection of products and services, show its successes and allow the audience to get a snapshot of the company’s activities and prospects.

    • Creative Firm Film (Self-Promotion)

      Promotion of an advertising or creative firm using the medium of film or video. Piece must have been aired or broadcast between January 1 and December 31.

    • Demo or Presentation Video

      A visual presentation showing how something works or a presentation to an interested, i.e. targeted, audience. Entry must have been aired or broadcast between January 1 and December 31.

    • Infomercials

      A television commercial for a product or service presented in the form of a short documentary. Should have been 1st aired, broadcast or streamed January 1 to December 31.

    • In-Theater Commercials

      Commercials or promotions that are shown in a movie theater. Movie trailers would be included in this category.

    • Public Service Film or Video

      A short film or videorecording presented by a nonprofit organization which attempts to persuade the audience to take some specific action or adopt a favorable view towards some service, institution, issue, or cause.

    • Sales Film or Video

      A presentation of a product or service created with the intention of selling to the audience.

    • Show Openings or ID's or Titles

      Beginning graphics, sequences, music or images to a movie film, television production or station identification. Can include television news graphics.

    • Training Film or Video

      A training film or video is a form of educational film – a short subject documentary movie, that provides an introduction to a topic. Both narrative documentary and dramatisation styles may be used, sometimes both in the same production. Training films and videos are made and used by the military, and civilian industry.

    New Media & Web Design
    • Blogs

      A type of website or part of a website. Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.

    • Apps - Business

      A Web-based or mobile downloadable game or application made on behalf of a client to specifically market a business oriented good, service or event.

    • Apps - Education

      A Web-based or mobile downloadable game or application made on behalf of a client to specifically market an educational good, service or event.

    • Apps - Entertainment

      A Web-based or mobile downloadable game or application made on behalf of a client to specifically market an based good, service or event for entertainment value only.

    • Apps - Utility/Productivity

      A Web-based or mobile downloadable game or application made on behalf of a client to specifically market a good, service or event that focuses on productivity or is utilitarian in nature.

    • CD or DVD Interface

      This category does NOT judge CD/DVD packaging. Interface, audio, video, menus and all graphical/interactive elements will be judged including user accessibility.

    • E-Learning

      Includes all sites related to Sales, Technical, Management & Consumer Education.

    • Email Design

      A single email or email series promoting an idea, product or theme.

    • Graphical User Interface

      A user interface based on graphics (icons and pictures and menus) instead of text; uses a mouse, as well as a keyboard or touch screen, as an input device. All elements of the interface will be judged.

    • Icons

      This category would include app icons.

    • Online Advertising

      An advertisement that is embedded into a website. The ad itself links to the advertiser's website – or landing page. The intent is for visitors to click on the ad and go to the advertiser's page. Ads often use animation to help draw attention to the ad. Would include any kind of branded content.

    • Podcasts and Webcasts

    • Social Media

      Elements and advertising designed specifically for social media applications i.e. Facebook Pages, memes, Twitter ads, etc.

    • Video Game - Graphics

      Graphics created for a video game environment.

    • Video Game - Interface

      Player interface designed specifically for the video game environment.

    • Online Video

      Main distribution is to be online/streamed. This category includes webisodes and viral videos. A viral video is a video that becomes popular through a viral process of Internet sharing, typically through video sharing websites, social media and email.

    • Web Games & Entertainment

      Entertainment programming designed specifically to be played and/or viewed in an online environment.

    • Website - B2B

      Website designed for "A to B" commerce. If the site is being entered as a redesign - "before" screenshot(s) are appreciated to assist in accurately evaluating the updated creative.

    • Website - Consumer

      Website designed for "B to C" commerce. If the site is being entered as a redesign - "before" screenshot(s) are appreciated to assist in accurately evaluating the updated creative.

    • Website - Catalog

      Website designed in a catalog format for the purpose of selling a product or services. If the site is being entered as a redesign - "before" screenshot(s) are appreciated to assist in accurately evaluating the updated creative.

    • Website - Public Service or Non-Profit

      Website for non-profit, governmental, educational or political bodies. Includes foundations, museums, NGOs, universities, etc. If the site is being entered as a redesign - "before" screenshot(s) are appreciated to assist in accurately evaluating the updated creative.

    • Website - Self-Promotion

      Website must have been created by entrant to promote own goods or services. If the site is being entered as a redesign - "before" screenshot(s) are appreciated to assist in accurately evaluating the updated creative.

    Television & Radio
    • Consumer TV

      Broadcast spot(s) targeted towards the consumer. Entry must have been broadcast during the previous calendar year between January 1 and December 31. Entry comprising of more than one spot must be entered into Campaign or Series category. There is no time limit on entry - i.e. must be :30 spot, etc.

    • Consumer TV - Self-Promotion

      Broadcast spot(s) promoting a network or station. Longer than a station identification spot. Entry must have been broadcast during the previous calendar year between January 1 and December 31. Entry comprising of more than one spot must be entered into Campaign or Series category. There is no time limit on entry - i.e. must be :30 spot, etc.

    • Corporate TV

      Corporate video production refers to audio-visual corporate communications material (such as DVD, High-definition video, streaming video or other media) commissioned primarily for a use by a company, corporation or organisation. A corporate video is often intended for a specific purpose in a corporate or B2B environment and viewed only by a limited or targeted audience. This may include product, service or company promotional videos, training videos and information videos. Corporate video production is frequently the responsibility of a company marketing or corporate communications manager. Examples of corporate video include staff training and safety videos, promotional/brand films, and financial results videos. Entry comprising of more than one spot must be entered into Campaign or Series category. There is no time limit on entry - i.e. must be :30 spot, etc.

    • Public Service TV

      Entry must have been broadcast during the previous calendar year between January 1 and December 31. A commercial for any non-profit entity is eligible including PSA's. Entry comprising of more than one spot must be entered into Campaign or Series category. There is no time limit on entry - i.e. must be :30 spot, etc.

    • Radio

      Entry must have been broadcast during the previous calendar year between January 1 and December 31. Entry comprising of more than one spot must be entered into Campaign or Series category. There is no time limit on entry - i.e. must be :15 spot, etc.

    • Green Media - Television or Radio

      Entry must be specifically promoting about a "green" product, company or service. Entry must have been broadcast during the previous calendar year between January 1 and December 31. These entries can also be entered under the more general categories if preferred. Entry comprising of more than one spot must be entered into Campaign or Series category. There is no time limit on entry - i.e. must be :30 spot, etc.

    • Educational or Documentary TV

      Any broadcast program that is designed for an educational purpose or in a documentary style. If the entry is a training video then piece should be entered into Training Film/Video category.

    Print & Packaging

    The Print & Packaging Design Awards contains 7 divisions and 117 categories for entrants to choose from.

    The 47th Print & Packaging Awards will accept entries from June 5, 2017 to September 22, 2017.  Student entries accepted in all categories. Click the category names below for more information.

    Illustration
    • Illustration - Architecture

      Imagery created for the design professional that accurately portray the details of an architectural project. These images are used to communicate design ideas to clients, owners, committees, customers, and the general public. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Illustration - Children's Book

      Illustration created specifically for use in a children's book. Child is defined as ages 0-18. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Illustration - Commercial

      Illustration created specifically for any commercial purpose. Technical drawings, excluding medical, would be entered here. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Illustration - Graphic Novel

      An illustration designed specifically to be used in a graphic novel or comic book. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Illustration - Medical

      An illustration specifically designed for use in the medical field or promotion/advertisment of a medical product, idea or service. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Illustration - News & Editorial

      An illustration specifically designed to provide a visual representation of a news story or opinion - i.e., an editorial cartoon. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    Print
    • Annual Reports

      A comprehensive report on a company's activities throughout the preceding year. Annual reports are intended to give shareholders and other interested people information about the company's activities and financial performance. Only printed versions of an Annual Report should be submitted to this category. Entry will be judged on printed quality, presentation of information, design elements, photography and typography if applicable.

    • Billboard

      Lorem ipsum dolor siA panel for the display of advertisements in public places, such as alongside highways or on the sides of buildings and/or the advertisement or message posted on such a panel. Entry should consist of 1 message - a series or multiple billboards conveying the same message should be submitted under the Campaign category.     • Branding, Campaign

      A series of advertisements, collateral, marketing pieces or activities undertaken by the seller of a product or service whose objectives are threefold: 1. improve its perceived value; 2. associate certain attributes or qualities with it in the minds of customers, and 3. increase the depth and breadth of general customer awareness (mindshare) about it All three of these objectives are geared toward increasing revenues from the given product or service.

    • Brochure - B2B

      Brochure promoting goods or services targeted towards other businesses versus the consumer - A to B marketing. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Brochure - Consumer Products or Services

      Brochure promoting goods and services specifically targeting consumers - B to C marketing. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Brochure, Single Sheet

      A single document that summarizes a product for publicity and sales, a single sheet promotional document.

    • Business Cards

    • Cards & Invitations

      Includes wedding, birthday, corporate events, birth announcements, etc.

    • Catalog - B2B

      A popular multi-page printed brochure showing the products offered by a manufacturer or seller. Marketed specifically towards other businesses - A to B marketing. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Catalog - Consumer

      A popular multi-page printed brochure showing the products offered by a manufacturer or seller. Marketed specifically towards the consumer - B to C marketing. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Collateral Material

      Printed information about a product, service or company including brochures, flyers, sales literature and other image pieces. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Corporate Identity Manual

      A style guide or style manual is a set of standards for the writing and design of documents, either for general use or for a specific publication, organization or field. The implementation of a style guide provides uniformity in style and formatting of a document. A set of standards for a specific organization is often known as "house style". Style guides are common for general and specialized use, for the general reading and writing audience, and for students and scholars of various academic disciplines, medicine, journalism, the law, government, business, and industry. Some style guides focus on graphic design, focusing on such topics as typography and white space. Web site style guides cover a publication's visual and technical aspects, along with text.

    • Corporate Identity Program

      A set of standards for a specific organization is often known as "house style". Style guides are common for general and specialized use, for the general reading and writing audience, and for students and scholars of various academic disciplines, medicine, journalism, the law, government, business, and industry. A campaign may contain style guides as well as collateral pieces for the entity.

    • Creative Firm - Self-Promotion

      Designed to self-promote goods and/or services of a creative firm. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Dimensional Promotion

      A mailing or package that has some height, width and depth. You mail it to customers or prospects as you would traditional direct mail. A bonus is something that rattles when shaken or simply has a lumpiness or unusual weight. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Direct Mail

      Advertisement sent through the mail, usually to targeted recipients. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Environmental Graphics

      Environmental graphic design embraces many design disciplines including graphic design, architecture, industrial design and landscape architecture. Piece can involve the visual aspects of wayfinding, communicating identity and brands, information design, or shaping a sense of place. "Environmental" refers to the three-dimensional world and the practice of design in a 3D versus the 2D realm of conventional graphic design. Some examples include the design and planning of sign programs, wayfinding consulting, exhibit and interpretive design, entertainment environments, retail design, information design including maps, as well as memorial and donor recognition programs. Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Screen Printed Specialty Item

      Any screen-printed item that IS NOT a T-shirt, Cap or Apparel. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Sign

      Can include menu boards, building signage, street signs, POP, etc. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Trade Show or Exhibition Displays or Graphics

      A trade show display consists of the physical screens, banners and other paraphernalia used to fill a temporary stall or booth at a trade fair or convention. The displays vary greatly in size, cost and complexity, but all are designed to visually represent a specific interest. Companies typically rent exhibit space from show organizers and then, design trade show displays to attract the attention of visitors and attendees at the trade show. Trade show displays usually use bold images and catch phrases, in an attempt to lure attendees to their exhibit space, so that they can give a sales pitch or hand out brochures.

    • Transit/Airport/Subway

      Any advertising that appears on the interior or exterior of buses, taxicabs, subway cars, and other public transportation, airports or transit stations. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • T-Shirts/Caps/Apparel

      Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Vehicle Graphics

      Can be vehicle wraps, magnets, "ad mobile." Any advertising done on or with a vehicle.

    Green/Sustainable Design
    • Eco-Friendly or Sustainable Design

      Design utilizing recycled and environmentally low-impact elements including but not limited to: fsc paper, vegetable based inks, biodegradable elements, elements of nature i.e. grass, sticks, rocks. Please include an explanation to the judges regarding what is "green" about the entry.

    • Green Advertising

      Printed marketing material representing a "green" or sustainable product, company or idea. Entry with more than one piece should be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Green Trademarks & Logos

      Trademarks & Logos for a "green" or sustainable product, company, idea or service. Please include brief describing company or product being represented by the logo.

    • Green/Sustainable Packaging or Anti-Packaging

      Non-traditional packaging designed to reduce carbon footprinting and/or utilizing fsc paper, vegetable or soy-based inks, biodegradable elements and elements of nature. Please include an explanation to the judges regarding what is "green" about the entry. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Repurposed Design

      Design/re-design of a product for alternative uses after the original product and/or components has/have reached the end of its original purpose. Please include an explanation to the judges regarding what was repurposed if not obvious in the entry and images (if possible) of the before & after products.

    Photography
    • Photography - Book

      Photography utilized specifically in a book. Subject matter or target market can be varied. Please include contextual information with the image(s). Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Photography - Commercial

      Commercial photography can include: * Advertising photography: photographs made to illustrate and usually sell a service or product * Fashion and glamour photography. Fashion photography emphasizes the clothes or product, glamour emphasizes the model. * Crime Scene Photography - photographing scenes of crime such as robberies and murders. * Still life photography usually depicts inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural or man-made. * Food photography can be used for editorial, packaging or advertising use. Food photography is similar to still life photography, but requires some special skills. * Editorial photography: photographs made to illustrate a story or idea within the context of a magazine. * Portrait and wedding photography: photographs made and sold directly to the end user of the images. * Landscape photography: photographs of different locations. * Wildlife photography that demonstrates life of the animals. Please include contextual information with the image(s). Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Photography - Magazine

      Photography taken for a magazine cover or article. Please submit contextual information along with the photograph(s). Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Photography - News and Editorial

      Photography taken for a news article or editorial. Please submit contextual information along with the photograph(s). Entries consisting of more than one photo must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Photography - Digitally Enhanced

      Photography that has been enhanced digitally through software. Please provide "before" and "after" images or an explanation of how the image was enhanced. Entries consisting of more than one image must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    Typography
    • Typography - Advertisement

      Only typography will be considered in this category. Any kind of advertisement is acceptable. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Typography - Book Cover

      Only typography will be considered by the judges in this category. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    • Typography - Logo Design

      Only typography will be considered by the judges in this entry.

    • Typography - Magazine

      Only typography will be considered by the judges in this category. Entries consisting of more than one piece must be entered into the Campaign or Series category.

    Packaging
    • Display/POP

      Packaging that has been designed/created specifically for food or beverage items. Wine and liquor bottle would fall in this category. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Health & Beauty Packaging

      Packaging designed/created for the Health & Beauty industry. Can include perfume, personal care, hygiene, make up, first aid, etc. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Home & Garden Packaging

      Packaging designed/created for a product to be used in a home or garden environment. Can include anything from window treatments to insecticide bottles. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Industrial Packaging

      The protective wrapping and boxing of finished industrial goods for shipment. Most common example would be a form of clamshell packaging. This category would also include packaging designed with special security features. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Medical & Drug Packaging

      Packaging specifically designed/created to a medical industry or drug related item. Pharmaceuticals would fall in this category. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Menus & Winelists

      Any menu and or winelist can be submitted into this category. Point of Sale signage can also be included but is eligible for the Sign Category. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Promotional Packaging

      Packaging specifically designed for a limited engagement product or special event. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.

    • Regulated Material Packaging

      Packaging specifically designed/created for lps, videos, cds or dvds. Does not apply to the interface - only the packaging encasing the disc or in some cases the disc itself. There is no limit to the number of pieces the entry can contain. Entry will accrue the higher Packaging entry fee.
