Bates Motel was, from the beginning, a chance to push the networks’ dramas to a higher, edgier, and more impressive level. In order to truly convey this, we decided to use our tease campaign to highlight the idea that this show would defy all expectations not just in its quality, but its content. We showcased the “weird world” of Bates Motel with intense and mysterious close-ups. Each image was designed to focus on something that expanded the Psycho story into new terrain: a close-up of an endless pot field; two hands cuffed under a sink; burning feet dangling from a lamppost; a severed hand washed ashore; and a girl breathing through tubes. Each image had its own color palate, suggesting that only with all of the myriad portraits of this world, can one see the full spectrum of its complexity. The campaign ran on kiosks and bulletin boards, and all drove to Tune-In with the phrase “Check-In 3.18.13”, making viewers a future resident of the Bates Motel itself.

The series premiere of Bates Motel delivered 3 million total viewers and 1.6 million in both A18-49 and A25-54. This performance made Bates Motel the #1 original drama series debut ever on A&E in both demos.
